ARTES 5G Market analysis and use-case definitions (ESA)

In this project, Axipiter analysed the current market landscape and identified potential use cases for integrating Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites with 5G networks. The study focused on understanding which market segments could benefit from this emerging technology, building on previous TIM “Service and Applications” considerations and providing a service-provider perspective. The analysis examined existing technologies, communication gaps in terrestrial networks, and the capabilities of LEO satellite constellations to address coverage limitations, particularly in rural, remote, and underserved areas.

The results highlight that LEO satellites can complement 5G networks by providing nearly-global coverage, supporting enhanced mobile broadband, massive IoT connectivity, and ultra-reliable low-latency communications. Small satellites are expected to lead market growth due to lower deployment costs and flexibility. The study also identified key industrial players (e.g., SpaceX, OneWeb, Airbus) and emerging initiatives by tech companies such as Google and Amazon. Overall, the analysis confirms that LEO-5G integration can overcome the digital divide and enable a wide range of applications across public, commercial, and critical infrastructure sectors.
